TIMER

The timer is the member responsible for keeping track of time.  The timer lets the speakers and evaluators know when to begin closing and when to end their talks.

Prior to the meeting

§        Write out your explanation of the rules in the clearest possible language and rehearse it.  An example would be:  Thank you Mr./Madame Toastmaster.  Proper timing is one thing we practice in our speeches at Toastmasters.  During each Table Topics speech, I will turn the yellow light on after 30 seconds, the red after 60 seconds, and the white after 90 seconds.  When the white light is turned on the speaker immediately becomes ineligible for awards.   Everyone who speaks between 30-90 seconds is eligible to receive votes for Best Table Topics Speech today.  Mr./Madame Toastmaster.

§        For the benefit of the guests, be sure to emphasize timing rules and how timing signals will be given.

Upon arrival at the meeting

§        The electronic timer is located in the clubs storage box.  Clear the time by pressing left button.

§        Site where the electronic timer can easily be seen by all (back of room).

During the meeting

§        When introduced, you may stay seated, explain the timing rules and demonstrate the signal device.

§        Throughout the meeting, signal each program participant as indicated by the specific timing rules.  Record name and time used.

§        After Table Topics, the Toastmaster will ask you which Table Topics speakers were within time.  There is no need to say what the actual times were; the club just needs to know who can receive votes.

§        Keep the exact time for each regular speaker.  After the last prepared speech, the Toastmaster will ask you to give the speakers their exact speaking times, so they will know how they did against the target theyve set in practice.

§        After Evaluations, the Toastmaster will ask you which evaluators were not within time.

After the meeting

§        Return the electric timer to the club storage box.
